Beleriand and Realms of The North by Sirielle Beleriand and Realms of The North by Sirielle
Map rendering by Sirielle, with Thangorodrim, compass rose and tengwar frame by Ominously. Published on-line with Ominously's permission.

Based on on maps by J.R.R. Tolkien in HoME, Christopher Tolkien in The Silmarillion &  Karen Wynn Fonstad in The Atlas of Middle-earth,  and invaluable tips from Ominously, without whom the map would be incomplete :thanks:

Update.

Regarding the source map by JRRT - not HoME XII, but XIpages 182-185. Thanks to Demosthenes at TheOneRing.net to pointing out it's not XII:

Thank you for the feature, too! Got to fix it on/in the image description, soon.

Press Download to see details (2472×1415) #1

Note on the buildings - they are more symbols of cities and fortresses, showing their different characters than literal renderings of the actual buildings.

This is such a beautiful rendering of the map! :)
I'm curious though - how did the A3 print turn out? Do you have a higher resolution image for that large a print?

Thank you! :thanks: I drew this in B3, so it can be printed larger than A3, only the paper I wanted didn't come in larger size, also prints up to A3 are probably more detailed than large format. At least that's what I think basing on printing descriptions, haven't tested large format print, yet (in general, not only the map).

Oh no, I was only going by the pixel size of the image, no real life experience printing maps (I probably should try though). Large format prints usually look good at 200+ pixels per inch for photos and stuff but you can get away with less for A3. Do maps still look good at smaller print resolutions?

I never post original resolution with printable images, so you cannot judge it by the map available on-line, though the image here is larger than most of my images at dA. Initially it was made to look good in B5 - my friend needed it in such format. Finally he has printed it in A4, since I added a lot more details than he needed. And it looks great, every name is readable, though some of the smallest details are gone - like details of the doors in Nargothrond, patterns on the dwarven doors or the smallest waterfalls. Well, try to print the web image (download larger size than preview using the button on the right) and see what comes out. It should be decent even from this file, though I don't expect it to be as sharp as from the original resolution. On a print larger than A3 names/letters might be too large, but that's a question of taste and how far you want to be to read all the names.

Ah Sirielle, this is so beautiful. For me, this is now the definitive map of Beleriand, and whenever I paint tales that took place there this will be the reference I turn to in order to get a sense of 'perspective'. I mean that seriously! :+fav: - of course ....

Thank you! :thanks: I'm glad you find it that helpful :) I'll have it at Oxonmoot in September as it is (are you planing to come to Oxonmoot perhaps?), but in the future I hope to make some additional maps and add more details to this one. Not sure when, though, it make take some years as it did before I decided to draw this one.

Hi there - so sorry for the late reply! As you can tell I didn't make it to Oxonmoot - I've never been in fact. Perhaps next year! I read that it was an especially long celebration for 2014; I hope you had a great time, and I'm glad this work was showcased there. It's very well deserved, and to me, the best map of Beleriand I've seen. In fact, I'd love it if you could use this style template for other M-e maps - obviously the most well known Third Age one, but also perhaps Numenor, Valinor and/or M-e in its various stages throughout history (I really like, for example, those maps which show Beleriand connected to the TA map and so give you a sense of scale - I think you'd make that work really well). Anyway, it's up to you of course! As you say, this one took some years to decide upon ;).
