The Age of Stars, Sun yet has to be made. Olwë in Beleriand, looking across the sea towards the Undying Lands. Soon his Lindar will follow West. Inspired by The Silmarillion.

Two lords they had, for their numbers were very great: Elwë Singollo, which signifies Greymantle, and Olwë his brother. The hair of Olwë was long and white, and his eyes were blue; but the hair of Elwë was grey as silver, and his eyes were as stars; he was the tallest of all the Elven-folk.

J. R. R. Tolkien, Morgoth's Ring, The Later Quenta Silmarillion: "Of the Coming of the Elves", p. 163

Thank you :thanks: I'm fond of all these features of his face, too. Only couldn't work out his mouth as I wanted, but perhaps it's just what he looks like or what the situation forced him to ;)

You've done such an amazing job painting him; his expression and the depth to his eyes to the detail of his hair.
Amazing job!

I'm curious what do you think of the third kinslaying [link] - I was trying to fit a plate armour on Maedhros (though I know source texts never mention full plate armour on elves).

Ah Ok. Well it's been a while since I read through the Silmarillion so I could be wrong. But if I ever draw any of these guys myself I'll make sure to consult it first. I always check the stuff out before I illustrate it just to make sure I'm right.

I'm guessing white would mean white. Like this box that I'm typing the response into.

Thank you! I don't think so, we've got only silver hair of his brother. But maybe it's there somewhere hidden, as it has happened in the past ;)

They had mostly dark hair, just as Noldor. Rare silver hair were in Elwe's family and a few other exeptions. Some blond hair must have accured, too, but the major population had dark hair. We might onluy wonder what does "white" mean? I imagine a platinum blond, with no yellow hues at all.

Completely awesome. I always have pictured him with white hair also. I see your quotes from the History of the Middle Earth, but I'm pretty sure it also says he has white hair in the Silmarillion. On the other hand I tend to picture a lot of the Teleri and Silvan elves as having white hair.

Sept, not Oct, scroll down ;) And 'Quendi and Eldar' are in the XI volume of the History of Middle-earth, not Xth as I wrote before.

They wowke up at the banks of Cuivienen, in pairs. There is a legend of the awakening "Cuivienyarna" in HoME X, that gives exact numbers, but it is intended to be a fairy tale for kids to learn counting - Eldar did use 12 system, not 10 as we do (sorry, don't know proper English names for the systems). Yet we can take form teh legens taht there was the biggest group of Lindar (named Teleri by Noldor, but they probably never liked this name), smaller of the Noldor and the smallest of the Minyar (called Vanyar by Noldor, which name they probably liked given it's em,m meaning). More data is given in the essay Quendi and Eldar. And a bit more of the discussion here [link] :) (my journal from Oct 2007).

That's right there were 4 because the Teleri had 2. And one of them stayed behind in Doriath. You know Tolkien never does say why the 4 kings were actually kings. He talks about kinship and what not. I don't think he intended for the elves to start off with 2 people like Adam and Eve. But I suppose if he did then then it would make sense for the first male sons to be the first leaders. Of course then I would wonder what happened to the original mother and father. Probably they would still be wandering around in the far east in the Wild Woods or maybe living underground.

When I read it I always thought that the elves started off as a handful of people and families, not as 2 individuals. I could be wrong though. I suppose it's something that Tolkien wanted to leave up to the reader.

Or one of the 4 fathers, Ingwë had kids, too (at least "Ingwion" is mentioned in HoME). I place the future kings of the Eldar in the second generation of the Cuivienen - first kids. I've had a poll on that, but it disappeared with my subscription's end.

Ah yes, Olwe was one of the original three fathers. He was the chief of the largest tribe of elves. And the ones that scattered on the way became Silvan elves. A most excellent depiction.
