Ondolinde map close up by Sirielle Ondolinde map close up by Sirielle
A variation on a map of Gondolin, a close up you've already seen at Instagram if you follow me there. The Great Gate and hypothetically placed the House of the Hammer of Wrath.

A map done again with constant encouragement and support of my favorite Tolkien loremasters Ominously and ML. But this time it is a lot of guessing and constructing based on descriptions and existing maps. The street plan itself has been changed a few times and so on. Digital drawing in Photoshop. I multiplied houses and elements in case anyone wondered if I drew every single window. On the other hand I redrew a lot after shifting elements on canvas. And yes - it took me ages and I would change elements and shapes again and again, if not my friends stopping me ;)

I couldn't decide if the city was parted with walls inside (being build up of many smaller walled cities) or had an open plan inside of the great wall guarding it. (Also how much neo-Gothic or neoclassical I want it to look like. I still wonder ;) ) Finally I chose the option of an open city, but with a fortress for every of the twelve houses inside of it, treating the houses as military centers in the city. What do you think - was it built with internal walls inside or not? In theory it's hidden position was it's weapon, and then if the main wall would be breached nothing else would help.

Forgot to add how much I love the map. I've always struggled with visualizing Gondolin, even after peering at Karen Fonstad's map. The details are great, though I personally imagine the architectural style as being more Neoclassical or Gothic.

Thank you :thanks: At first I imagined more terraces, but it appears builders flattened the mountain top before building the city, leaving only the hill for palace. And I was more on the neo-Gothic side at first, since it fits well with the Noldor in my vision. I still feel there are not enough towers ;) I had too many contradictory ideas, I need to come back to it in the future to draw and see what feels better.

I have the same vision of Gondolin as having many towers. That said, whatever you have drawn is lovely, including making Gar Ainion a plaza, perhaps reminiscent of the Ring of Doom, rather than an enclosed temple with a roof. Whatever future drawings of the city you make will be interesting to see!

I am for the internal walls, but I don't think of them as military in purpose. The main wall and the seven gates were the fortifications. I see the minor walls enclosing each House as more for identity. I agree they would be largely decorative. Tirion in Aman had a gate, after all, in a time of bliss and in a land that was at peace.

It is a good idea for internal walls in this sense, making a different character, mood for every of the twelve houses

I've sort of envisioned it with internal walls not so much to serve a military function, but to get more building space (the space between each wall and the rising hill being filled up with rubble and thus providing more plain ground than would otherwise be available).

Love the map idea, at any rate - it makes the place feel so much more real, and it's beautifully executed, too!

Thank you :thanks: It is a good idea to use walls as spaces to host more houses. That was my idea in the beginning, when I imagined Gondolin being built on different levels, as some illustrations picture it. But then I have learned Elven engineers flattened the top of the mountain before building the city, leaving only the hill for the castle. So it was rather flat, thus I chose a park. But I still want to try a walled version, consisting of different cities within the city.

Yeah, I gotta admit that my inner picture is very much influenced by the description of Minas Tirith (the one that was formerly Minas Anor, not the one built by Finrod), and in Real World terms, Le Mont-St-Michel. So the flattened top of the mountain would only be the top of the cake, so to say.  Either way, I do love your maps (including the one you posted more recently). They're so full of amazing detail, it's brilliant!

Love it!
I always envisioned one great wall, then minor walls around each area that each house had lordship over.  However, the minor walls fell into disrepair and eventually became more decorative than functional as the city became complacent.  That was how it looked in my head anyway :)

Interesting  I have finally chosen an open park city with some walled houses inside. Still it is tempting to try a walled city, too.
